It’s been a long while since I have blogged about raw denim. Not since the 6 month update on the Nudie Grim Tim’s I bought last year in fact.
That is not to say my love for raw denim has faltered in anyway; I am still their biggest advocate, seeking to educate as many people who will listen.
It’s just now I have become a Dad, I just don’t have the same amount of spare time anymore…
That said, with my last purchase of raw denim over a year ago now, it was high time I started breaking in a pair.
A recent (and I must add increasingly rare) shopping trip saw the cheeky acquisition of a new pair of raw Edwin ED-80’s so I thought I’d make some spare time and throw together a quick post for you…
If you follow my blog you’ll know I am a massive fan of Edwin’s and I already have a pair of ED-71’s that are over 2 years old that look great.
The Fit
The ED80’s are slim fitting jean, defined as “Slim Taper”. They are a much slimmer fit than the ED71’s, which shows mainly around the leg and a higher rise at the waist.
Although the ED71’s are classed as a “Regular Slim”, they feel almost loose in comparison to my new ED-80’s.
The ED-80’s are in keeping with the current trend of tighter fitting jeans and offer a great mix of style and quality.
Sizing & Stretching
My standard fit is a 34″ x 32″ and that’s what I went for. They were tight in the store but fitted well for a slim fit jean. After a week or two they have started to stretch around the waist and thigh area as you would expect.
The denim is a lighter weight 12.8oz denim, which is why there is more stretching taking place. It is nothing excessive but certainly more than what took place in the heavier weighted Nudies.
I don’t mind a slightly looser fit, but if you wanted to keep these tight, I would recommend you size down by one.
Quality & Detail
As with all Edwins, they are put together very well using a 12.8oz Japanese denim. They have some great little details like the classic tobacco stitching and rainbow selvedge hems:
Price & Availability
As with most my jeans lately, I bought these from Liberties in London for around £115. Which is very reasonable for a pair of raw Japanese Denim Edwin’s. If I find somewhere selling them online I’ll post up a link.
Wrapping It Up
So far I have been wearing these jeans for a bout 2 weeks. There is already some nice fading and creasing taking place and they fit very well. Also the lighter denim is a welcome to my current collection of heavier denim jeans.
As per usual I shall post some more pictures of the Edwin ED-80’s after a few months so show how the fading is taking shape.
